(TMIH)
The
TMIH program at South County Cal-SOAP, is designed for students who plan to
attend Gavilan Community College and wish to transfer to a four-year college
or university. TMIH connects high school seniors with Gavilan Community College
faculty, staff, and services that will assist in their academic success. Upon
their arrival to Gavilan, TMIH students will not only be familiar with the
campus, but they will know where to go when they need any type of assistance. 
South County Cal-SOAP is currently serving sevaral TMIH students at five different high schools. Advisors and Lead Tutors are working closely with 10-12 students. TMIH students receive specialized academic and financial aid information related to transferring. These students also receive personalized attention such as one-on-one advising and group workshops designed to motivate students to achieve their educational and career goals.
TMIH Services and Activities:
Cal-SOAP College Fair– >The College Fair is an annual event held each November. Over 50 Representatives from UC, CSU, and private colleges and universities visit both Gavilan College & Gilroy High School to bring students a wide variety of information. The representatives are prepared to answer questions regarding admission requirements, major selection, housing, financial aid, and scholarships. The event provides students with a wonderful opportunity to learn about different universities, puck up applications and literature, and speak to representatives. Gavilan Tranfser Day AND the Cal-SOAP College Fair will take place on Thursday, November 6, 2008.
FAFSA Workshops – >Students are required to attend at least one Financial Aid Workshop. Most students will attend a workshop at their high school and they are encouraged to complete and submit their FAFSA early (by January 31st!). Weekly evening workshops are held at Gilroy High School, Live Oak High School, and San Benito High School.
GavFEST –GavFEST is a full day of fun, creativity and entertainment on the beautiful Gavilan College Gilroy campus. Admission is free to this family-friendly, one-of-a-kind event. Part open house, part arts festival, part celebration, GavFEST promises a good time for the whole community! Raffles will be conducted throughout the day, with a grand prize drawing at the festival’s close. GavFEST will take place on a Saturday in April.
Gavilan Placement Exam – All students who plan to attend Gavilan College must take the placement exam. This exam will determine at which level of English and Math students will be placed. Cal-SOAP & Gavilan come to YOUR high school campus to make testing more convenient for you!
TMIH Retreat – In the spring, TMIH students are taken to Gavilan Community College on a retreat. During this event, students have the opportunity to learn about the different student support services programs available at Gavilan College (e.g., TRIO, MESA, PUENTE, EOPS, Transfer Institute) which will provide them with a more individualized college experience. In addition, students will participate in a scavenger hunt which will allow them explore the campus and spot important buildings as well as classrooms in which they might have class instruction. Lastly, this event will give TMIH students the opportunity to meet students from other Cal-SOAP high schools who will also be attending Gavilan!
TMIH Graduation –In the spring, TMIH students from Cal-SOAP high schools will have a graduation ceremony held at Gavilan Community College. This is an opportunity to celebrate that these students are completing the TMIH program and that they will all be close to high school graduation. During the event TMIH students and their families receive dinner, awards, and have lots of fun!
